How do I pay for NYC transportation? ›

Use your own contactless card or mobile device or an OMNY card to tap to pay your fare. You can also pay using a MetroCard. Buses also accept exact change in coins. Get free rides when you tap to pay.

One Metro New York (OMNY)

OMNY is MTA's new contactless fare payment system that will eventually replace the MetroCard. With OMNY, you can use your own contactless card or smart device to pay your fare.

OMNY lets you pay your MTA bus fare with your phone, credit or debit card, or other wearable device. The OMNY reader can be found immediately after entering the bus.

Fast facts: All city buses accept the MetroCard, SingleRide ticket, OMNY contactless payments, and exact coin change (no pennies or paper money).

with Pay. Apple Pay is accepted on trains and buses throughout NYC. With your credit or debit card in Wallet, you can easily get where you need to go with just your iPhone or Apple Watch.

Contactless Payment Cards

In addition to Apple Pay, NYC buses also accept other contactless payment methods, such as credit/debit cards with contactless capabilities. Passengers can choose the payment option that suits their preferences and devices.

Using OMNY

OMNY, our contactless fare payment system, is available at every subway station. Tap your contactless credit or debit card, mobile device, or OMNY card at the OMNY reader on the turnstile. It doesn't matter which way the card or device is facing. When the reader shows GO, proceed through the turnstile.

Subway and bus fares increased from $2.75 to $2.90. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard rose $1 to $34, and a 30-day unlimited pass increased by $5 to $132. Express bus rides are also more expensive starting Sunday, jumping from $6.75 to $7. A 7-day unlimited express bus pass went up from $62 to $64.

To access the subway you can use a MetroCard (which you fill with money or can purchse a weekly pass) or with the new OMNY system which with a tap charges the $2.90 fare to your credit card through a contactless card of a e-wallet. Read about the MetroCard and OMNY to see which is best for you.

If your bank card shows the contactless symbol you can use it to pay for your travel. We accept American Express, Mastercard and Visa credit or debit cards.

Can I use my debit card in a bus? ›

Payment methods accepted

You can use any contactless Visa, Mastercard and American Express debit or credit card, including those in a digital wallet like Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Pay.

What happens if I forget to tap off? You will be charged the single journey price to the end of the route, so please remember to tap off to make sure you are charged the right price and benefit from the discounts.

Passengers on these routes will be able to ride without paying the fare. This pilot program will run for at least six months. The purpose of the pilot is to study how fare-free service affects ridership, access, equity, and fare evasion. It is made possible thanks to funding from the New York State FY2024 budget.

Tap a contactless credit or debit card, mobile device, or OMNY card at OMNY readers to pay the fare. Swipe your MetroCard with the logo and the black magnetic strip facing you and the clipped corner on the upper right.

AAR fares are the same as full fare on public transit. Show the driver your AAR ID card or AAR MetroCard or any photo ID and pay the exact fare as you board the vehicle. AAR MetroCards cannot be used to pay for Paratransit vehicle trips. AAR drivers do not provide change and do not accept roundtrip fares.

OMNY is the contactless fare payment system for public transportation in the New York region. Simply use your contactless credit or debit card, smart phone, wearable device, or an OMNY card to tap and go. OMNY will eventually combine fare payments and ticketing across subways, buses, paratransit, and commuter rail.
