Prep highlights: Hartland perfect game, no-hitter set up softball showdown with Novi (1)

Hartland had a perfect game and a no-hitter Monday in a 12-0, 11-0 softball sweep of Salem.

Senior Kylie Swierkos didn’t allow a base runner in six innings in the first game, striking out 11 of the 18 batters she faced. She threw strikes on 53 of 68 pitches.

In the second game, freshman Olivia Forrest threw a five-inning no-hitter. Salem’s only three base runners of the day reached on a walk, an error and a hit batter.

Faith DeLanoy hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener to give Hartland a 5-0 lead.

In the second game, Sadie Malik was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Abby Gardner was 3-for-3 for the Eagles.

Hartland is 17-1-1 overall and 12-0 in the KLAA West heading into a showdown at home for the division championship against Novi at 4 p.m. Thursday. Novi is 11-1. The Eagles will win the division by getting at least a split.

The first game, and possibly the nightcap, will feature a showdown between two of the top players in the KLAA, Swierkos and Novi senior pitcher Reganne Bennett.

Howell 11, Brighton 1

Howell 7, Brighton 2

Addison Caldwell went 5-for-8 with four doubles, giving her 12 doubles this season and boosting her batting average to .500

Delaney Gillett homered in each game and pitched Howell to both victories, striking out 12 batters in nine innings. Natalie Savage homered in the first game and Hannah Ramsden homered in the second game for Howell (13-8).

Melanie Buzo was 3-for-7 in the twinbill for Brighton (3-16).

Pinckney 6, Tec*mseh 4

Tec*mseh 18, Pinckney 14 (inc.)

A wild second game ended due to darkness after Tec*mseh scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to counter an 11-run fifth by Pinckney. If the game reverts to the last completed inning and is considered official, the Pirates will get the sweep.

Pinckney trailed 8-3 before scoring 11 runs in the fifth. CeCe Thorington was 4-for-4 with four RBI and Mallory Dickey drove in three runs for the Pirates.

In the first game, Pinckney scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth after trailing 4-3. Abby Rauser pitched two scoreless innings for the save. Thorington was 2-for-4.

Baseball

Hartland 1, Salem 0

A walk-off infield single by Logan Berner in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Hartland (11-7) the victory.

Catcher Brayden Crowe walked with two outs and nobody on. Courtesy runner Braylon Buback moved to third on a single by Landon Brown and scored the winning run on Berner’s second RBI of the season.

Gavin Nash pitched a one-hitter for Hartland, striking out 10 and walking one while facing two batters over the minimum. Salem’s Eric Sheppard allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Tec*mseh 3, Pinckney 0

Tec*mseh 10, Pinckney 6

Landen Bauer allowed only four hits in seven innings for Pinckney in the first game.

Ethan Putnam was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Dale Westphal also drove in two runs for the Pirates (8-11) in the nightcap.

Boys lacrosse

Hartland 20, Howell 5

Hartland set up a showdown for the KLAA West championship by improving to 8-0 in the KLAA and 3-0 in the division.

The Eagles will travel to Brighton at 7 p.m. Wednesday to face a Bulldog team that is also unbeaten in league play. The winner will play for the KLAA championship against the East Division champion at 7 p.m. Monday.

Evan Busby won 18 of 19 faceoffs for Hartland. Gavin Preston scored four goals, Dylan Ayotte had three goals and two assists, Drew Lockwood and Jacob Ross each had two goals and three assists, and Mason Payter had three goals for the Eagles.

Ethan Loebig scored twice for Howell.

Brighton 9, Novi 3

Riley Conlen scored four goals and Joe Libler three for Brighton, which is 12-3 overall.

Soccer

Pinckney 6, Ypsilanti 0

Pinckney clinched at least a share of its fourth straight SEC White championship, improving to 8-0 in the division with two games remaining. Adrian and Tec*mseh are tied for second place at 5-2 with three games left.

The Pirates are unbeaten in their last 36 division games, going 34-0-2 since losing 4-1 at Chelsea on April 30, 2019.

Kailey Lambert scored three goals and had an assist, Zaryah Griffin had a goal and two assists, Claire Denton had a goal and one assist, and Natalie Graves had a goal for Pinckney.

Fowlerville 3, Lansing Waverly 1

Cailyn co*ckerill, Emma Copeland and Autumn Carr scored for Fowlerville (7-4).

Golf

Schwartz Company Investment

Howell sophom*ore Zach Spencer tied for second place out of 100 golfers, shooting 1-under-par 71 at Washtenaw Country Club.

Hartland’s Brady Betteley tied for fifth with a 76.

Howell placed sixth out of 20 teams with a 321. Hartland was 12th with a 341 and Brighton was 13th with a 344.
