One of the best ways to maximize bathroom space is to install an over-the-toilet storage unit that can neatly organize everything, including extra toilet paper, washcloths, and toiletries. But we aren’t talking about flimsy solutions that can barely withstand a gust of wind coming through the window. We mean a high-quality, sturdy design that resembles a built-in shelving unit.
When it comes to storage durability, it’s mostly about the types of material used. Over-the-toilet storage units come in a variety of materials, such as metal, wood, and even a combination of both. In our experience, all three are sturdy enough to house toiletries and a supply of toilet paper and other items.
We found that those constructed from wood (including our top pick) seem to have enough weight to keep them sturdy and absorb additional weight from supplies. If you’re shopping for a piece that you’ll have for many years, we suggest thinking about adjustability so you can use it in different bathrooms or take it with you when you move.
To find the absolute best bathroom storage solutions for above the toilet, we put 15 recommended options to the test, spending over 5,000 hours to get an accurate feel on how well they’ll hold up and if they’re actually worth it.

What We Didn’t Like
Two people needed for assembly
Our top pick for the best over-the-toilet storage is the Utex 3-Shelf Bathroom Organizer. Although this option took us around 40 minutes to put together (and two people), it was well worth the effort. Plus, the storage unit came with clear instructions, which is always a big plus.
This freestanding, over-the-toilet storage, measuring 61.5 x 25.1 x 10 inches, is constructed from engineered wood, and is available in four colors, including a minimalist white color that would go with just about any bathroom decor. This stylish appearance is what sets this unit apart. And, while it can stand on its own, it also has a wall mount feature if you want extra security (this is especially great for those in earthquake-prone states).
Although the unit only has three shelves, it’s able to fit a lot due to its size and open-shelving design. In fact, the unit freed up plenty of counter space. We also found that the ample width of the shelves makes it easy to move things around without losing any storage space. And, since it doesn’t have a cabinet door like some models, it fits taller items on the top shelf. Overall, we think the unit held so much more than we were expecting. The bottom shelf alone comfortably stored eight rolls of toilet paper.
Dimensions: 61.5 x 25.1 x 10 inches | Material: Engineered wood | Color: Gray, white, espresso, wood grain | Assembly Required: Yes | Type: Freestanding | Tools Included: No
What We Like

What We Didn’t Like
Depth isn’t wide enough for towels
For our best value pick, we recommend the Rolanstar Over The Toilet Storage, which has a minimalist design with four open shelves and four hooks that you can use to hang dry brushes, extra loofahs, and more. The storage unit also features a toilet paper holder that you can use as a freestanding option. Or, if you have a wall-mounted toilet paper holder, you can store an extra roll on this shelving system.
This storage unit measures 68 x 23.6 x 9.4 inches and features built-in shelves that provide plenty of storage for all of your toiletries. Though we discovered it’s a little snug to fit fluffy towel stacks, you could easily store a small basket with washcloths or extra hand towels, which makes it much easier to grab as needed.
We also noticed that there is enough clearance between the tank and the bottom shelf of the unit, so you can lift the lid of the tank and adjust the flapper valve, if that becomes an issue.
When testing this storage unit, we found that it does take some time—around 45 minutes—to piece everything together. We think it was fairly straightforward and possible to assemble alone (though we preferred to have an extra set of hands). We love that all of the parts were labeled, making the assembly pretty intuitive.Plus, the unit also comes with spare screws—in case you accidentally lose one.
Dimensions: 68 x 23.6 x 9.4 inches | Material: Engineered wood, metal | Color: Rustic brown, white, gray | Assembly Required: Yes | Type: Free standing | Tools Included: Yes

Lengthy setup
The West Elm Modern Leaning Over-The-Toilet Cubby is worth every penny, especially if you’re looking for something you will have for years. This over-the-toilet storage is constructed from durable solid mahogany wood with an oil-based paint finish and is engineered to withstand moisture that is inevitable with bathrooms.
In addition to its durability, what makes this option well worth the investment is its flexibility. Although the shelves are fixed, the legs are actually adjustable, so you can shift it depending on the height of your toilet tank. This makes it possible to adapt to all future bathroom situations if you move (so long as the width and overall height are also compatible).
We found that this modern-looking unit has ample capacity and even had room for more items if needed. We were able to store about seven bottles and jars (like shampoo, hair oil, lotion, and perfume), a candle, a handheld mirror, a large display box, and a couple of acrylic makeup organizers on the shelf.
For the most part, we thought assembly was fairly straightforward. It took around 65 minutes, though we found some parts of the assembly a tad confusing but were easily able to work through it. Plus, the shelving system came with everything necessary to piece this together.

What We Didn’t Like
Industrial-looking, so may not fit all styles
The Azmall Over The Toilet Storage might look a little too industrial for some preferences, but it was one of the most functional options we tried. This metal toilet storage shelf features a durable design and measures 65 x 26 x 14 inches. We like that the size of the unit does not interfere with the ability to access the toilet.
It also has four sturdy shelves that are completely adjustable so you have a lot of flexibility with what you want and need to store. It sat firmly on the floor and wasn't wobbly, and the pieces did not chip, break, or become unusable during the testing period. In addition to its durability and flexibility, we love that the shelving system comes with lots of different hooks, plus a toilet paper holder for extra storage.
We found that it also comes with four shelf liners, which we thought was helpful because the shelves are slatted.
We also found that this unit was relatively easy to put together. The instructions aren’t the most in-depth so that might not be the same experience for everyone. Nonetheless, it took us half an hour to piece all of the parts together and have a working organizer.

What We Didn’t Like

Hard to access tank
If you have a smaller space and don’t want to add to it with a bulky over-the-toilet storage unit, this miniature version is a fantastic alternative. The Godboat Over The Toilet Storage is constructed from durable metal material and comes in one, two, or three-tier designs that secure directly onto the tank with the help of a fixed bracket.During testing, we liked that this unit could fit in pretty much any bathroom because it's small and easy to assemble.
It offers a sleek style, and albeit on the smaller side, can actually store quite a bit for its size, plus it comes with side hooks for additional items like towels and loofahs.
While the storage unit didn’t interfere with the day-to-day use of the toilet, we think this design makes it harder to access the tank. If you needed to remove the tank lid for whatever reason, you’d have to unhook this storage unit and remove it first. Nonetheless, it’s still one of the best solutions for over-the-toilet storage in a smaller space.
Dimensions: 4.6 x 12 x 6 (1-tier), 12.2 x 12.6 x 6 (2-tier), 20.8 x 12.6 x 6 (3-tier) inches | Material: Metal | Color: White, black | Assembly Required: Yes | Type: Freestanding | Tools Included: Yes
What We Like

Little wobbly when freestanding
For another wooden option, consider the Homykic Over The Toilet Storage. This freestanding over-the-toilet storage measures 66.73 x 24.8 x 10.24 inches and has three shelves for plenty of storage space. While testing, we were impressed by how much it was able to hold, especially when it came to toilet paper overflow (we fit a total of 16 rolls). We also love that the shelves have enough width and depth to add a shallow basket for toiletry organization.
Hooks are a separate product and don’t actually come with the unit (though they are compatible). And, while the shelf system is technically freestanding, we found it to be a bit wobbly and recommend utilizing the wall-mount feature to secure it down.

Songmics 3-Tier Bamboo Over Toilet Organizer
What We Like

What We Didn’t Like
Shelves are slightly deeper than toilet tank
If shelf adjustability matters to you, consider the Songmics Over The Toilet Storage. This option is constructed from a durable bamboo material, measures 64.2 x 24.8 x 10.2 inches, and comes in five different finish options, including forest green for a pop of color.
The freestanding over-the-toilet storage solution is also highly durable (though you can mount it to the wall for even more stability) and we found that it is easy to assemble in 35 minutes, even when doing it alone.
What makes this option so great is its adjustable shelf design. The storage system features three shelves that each adjust to different heights—and you can even take one down and opt for two shelves if you plan to store something a bit taller.

What We Didn’t Like
Long setup time
For an enclosed over-the-toilet storage option, consider the Spirich Over The Toilet Storage Cabinet, which features glass cabinet doors with two shelves, plus an open-air cubby section for additional storage (or decor). This durable bathroom cabinet is constructed from engineered wood, pine, and glass and features sturdy cabinet doors that close easily with magnet strips. The interior shelving also comes with height adjustability, so it’s easy to customize the storage for your needs.
Our biggest complaint is the overall setup time, which took around 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. However, the time spent is somewhat expected since setting up cabinet storage is a little more complicated compared to other over-the-counter shelves. During testing, we found you will also need a drill and a screwdriver.
Additionally, if you plan to mount this to the wall for added stability, we recommend installing the base beam before you go through the trouble of mounting. We made the mistake of securing it down first, which made completing the base a lot more challenging.

Can’t wall mount it if you have baseboards
The Sriwatana Over The Toilet Storage Cabinet is another excellent cabinet option, especially if you’re shopping for a wooden style with a farmhouse-inspired design. This over-the-toilet storage unit is constructed from engineered wood, measures 66.54 x 23.23 x 9.25 inches, and is available in white and gray finishes. It also features a chic, farmhouse-inspired design with barn door detailing, plus durable handles that open and close the cabinet doors with ease.
Similar to the Spirich Over The Toilet Storage Cabinet (our best with glass cabinets), this option also features two shelves inside the cabinet and an open-faced cubby for additional storage and decor.
And, while it can be a freestanding unit, you have the option to secure it to the wall for more stability—just note that the unit won’t reach the wall if you have baseboards in your bathroom.

Instructions are a bit tricky to understand at first
The Yaheetech Over The Toilet Storage is our top pick for the most versatile option, thanks to its timeless style, adjustable interior shelves, and overall capacity.
Constructed from a sturdy wood material, this shelving unit measures 65.75 x 24.8 x 9.06 inches with two shelves behind the cabinet doors, plus an open-faced cubby spot for decor and additional storage. In addition to a solid wood design, this storage unit also comes in a trendy rattan style, too.
While the instructions were a bit tricky to understand at first, and it can take up to two hours to put together, we like that this option is possible to assemble on your own. It’s also super easy to open and close the cabinet doors, thanks to a magnetic strip that keeps everything secure when not in use.

Final Verdict
Our top pick for the best overall over-the-toilet storage is the Utex 3-Shelf Bathroom Organizer. The freestanding unit is sturdy and comes with the option to secure it to the wall for further durability. For our best value option, we also love the Rolanstar Over The Toilet Storage. This over-the-toilet storage features a minimalist design with four shelves and hooks on the side for additional storage options.
How We Tested Over-the-Toilet Storage Systems
When testing for the best over-the-toilet storage, we looked at 15 different styles and spent approximately 5,040 hours testing for setup, capacity, quality, design, durability, and value. Throughout the testing period, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we could fit on the storage systems, making it clear that an over-the-toilet storage unit is an excellent use of vertical space, no matter how much room you have to work with in your bathroom.
We also found that shelving may feel a bit wobbly, so we also considered wall mounted options to keep units from toppling. That wasn’t much of a concern, though. We reported that even though we had a couple of wobbly shelves, we never worried about items tumbling down.
After hours of testing, we took into account the insight accumulated for each unit and carefully narrowed down our top selections.
What to Look for in an Over-the-Toilet Storage Unit
Look for Compatibility
When shopping for the best over-the-toilet storage, the first and most important thing to consider is the overall compatibility of the unit and your bathroom. Take measurements of your space above and around your toilet so you have a good idea of exactly how much space you have.
From a style standpoint, over-the-toilet storage ranges drastically, so it’s also important to think about your bathroom’s decor and color scheme and make sure that the storage system is also compatible with your style. For our most versatile, we like the Yaheetech Over The Toilet Storage, which comes in a variety of colors, including navy, gray, espresso, and white.
Install With Ease
In most cases, you’ll need to assemble an over-the-toilet storage solution yourself, so it’s also worth thinking about ease of installation and how much effort you’re willing to put into building the shelving. Take a look at the product description to get an idea of the overall assembly process and how clear the instructions are.
It’s also a smart idea to see if any tools are required or—even better—if it comes with the tools you need, such as an Allen wrench. If assembly isn’t your thing, shop for storage solutions that you can buy already assembled, or consider hiring someone through services, such as Taskrabbit, to put your new storage piece together for you.
Pay Attention to Size and Weight Capacity
As a storage unit, you’ll want the over-the-toilet storage to hold all of your belongings in a way that feels orderly and convenient. Look at the overall amount of storage space, as well as any beneficial features like adjustable shelf height to accommodate various items and provide customization.
You should also make note of the items you plan to house on your over-the-toilet storage and their overall weight. Having a rough idea upfront will improve your shopping experience, so you can see the maximum weight the storage unit can safely hold. This is important to ensure your items fit and also for safety reasons. Overloading a unit could cause damage or make it topple over.
Along with weight, consider clearance height—aka, how much space you have to work with between the top of the toilet and the ceiling. Since over-the-toilet storage solutions are usually complete units, it’s crucial that the entire unit fits within the space allotted. We love our best overall pick, the Utex 3-Shelf Bathroom Organizer. The freestanding unit is sturdy, comes with the option to secure it to the wall, and fits most spaces, measuring 61.5 x 25.1 x 10 inches.
